Earlier this morning the nominations for the 94th Oscars®  were announced, revealed by the lovely Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan in a live stream available at Oscars.com. Tracee and Elis were joined alongside some special guests to announce all 23 categories and the viral event delivered delight to all us movie lovers across the world. Power of the Dog comes out on top with the most nominations in hand with a grand total of 12 nominations. Other major contenders are King Richard, Dune, West Side Story and Belfast. You might find there to some unexpected surprises on this day of nominations.

How are Oscars chosen?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has 17 branches and every year Academy members from each of the 17 branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories. So actors will nominate actors, hair and makeup nominate hair and makeup, so on and so forth.

However with the international Fithe Animated Feature Film and International Feature Film categories, nominees are selected by a vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees. This year, the Academy saw its highest ever voter participation in the organization’s history, with members submitting ballots from 82 countries.

Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car is nominated for Best Picture and World Premiered at the Cannes Films Festival in 2021.
